🍧 Nothing says summer like… brain freeze! So, this week, I’m sharing a few of our favorite local spots to grab a sweet treat to beat the summer heat. Or, in my case, a reason to escape my igloo and go sit outside in the heat! 😉

🐢 Meet Sully’s Sulcata 

This week’s not-so-furry friend is Mantilda — yes, MANtilda — because Sully’s family originally thought he was a she.

Mantilda is a 7‑year‑old sulcata tortoise with a refined palate: leafy greens, the occasional slice of watermelon, and absolutely no tolerance for late dinners (he’ll knock on the patio door with his shell to get the show on the road). What personality!

When he’s not reminding everyone who’s boss, Mantilda enjoys long strolls around the garden, extended sunbathing sessions, deep power naps, and is an avid spelunker (a tortoise’s favorite pastime).

And this lucky fella doesn’t just live in any old ordinary garden either, he lives in one of the best! Through writing The Buzz, I met Tina Sutton-Beatty and I just love seeing what she’s growing (and cooking) at her Green Thumb Urban Farm. Follow along. 🌿 

Fun Fact: Sulcata tortoises are the third largest tortoise species in the world and can live up to 70 years (or more)!

Fun Fact 2: The Guinness World Record for the fastest tortoise speed is held by Bertie, a South African leopard tortoise, who took the title in 2014, clocking in at roughly 0.63 miles per hour. Bertie lives with his girlfriend, Shelly, and their offspring at Adventure Valley in Durham, UK.  See him in action.
