BUZZ LOVES: CHILLY SWEET TREATS

Bring on the Brain Freeze

I’LL STOP THE WORLD…

As you may know from other stories I’ve shared here, I’m on a quest to add more fun to my life. After spending decades with my nose to the grindstone, life is now asking me to change. My former Type A+ personality would never have done something so frivolous as to go get ice cream. I ain’t got time for that.

Well, that was until I was ‘on task’ fetching fresh corn for our regular Saturday night BBQ dinner on a Saturday morning at 9:30 AM when I happened upon some really adorable kids at the Kerr Family Farm selling ice cream. I’m a sucker for work ethic.

Besides, who can say no to kids selling anything? Not me. I didn’t even think about it. Here take my money. Peanut butter. Sold. Then realized I just bought ice cream at 9:30 in the morning, I was 15 minutes away from home, and it was 100 degrees outside. I was therefore forced to have ice cream for breakfast. Yeah so what, I’m also not supposed to eat dairy or sugar but… the kids, so cute. The cause, so worthy.

Which is how I’ve found myself with an ice cream addiction, going on 4 weeks now in the making. Needless to say, I’ve been on tour filling the need.

What I’ve found in my outings is that it’s actually nice to have a reason to get out of the house for a bit and it’s also surprisingly fun to see how many other people you’ll meet who are out doing the same thing. As they say, great minds think alike.

I’m starting off by sharing my hands-down favorite from Kerr Family Farm because the clock is ticking… This Saturday (June 28th) is their last day of the season and your last opportunity to not only experience all the fresh finds they have to offer, but also to try their homemade ice cream.

AND MELT WITH YOU…

KERR FAMILY FARM STAND

This one’s extra special because you only have one day, Saturday, June 28th to get your hands on it! The Kerr Family Farm Stand is beloved for their fresh, local produce, but they also churn up small-batch homemade ice cream that will make you melt. I loved it so much I had to share about it on Instagram, which inspired my favorite local adventurer, Coco.OnThe.Go, to visit too!

Coco Said:I don’t want to ever eat ice cream anywhere else!

Secret Scoop: In addition to their standard flavors, vanilla & peanut butter cup, this Saturday, the Kerrs are rolling out their family’s favorite flavor: Cinnamon Banana Nutella

ICED GOURMET SHAVE ICE

📍Find Them: Every Wednesday (through 8/02) at The Village Green in Verrado (4239 N. Village Street - Buckeye, AZ) from 4-8 PM.

ICED serves real fruit shave ice with handcrafted cordial syrups and no artificial flavors or colors. They’re mobile and typically provide their services at pop-ups, events & weddings (remember that!) but lucky us, for the summer, you can find them every Wednesday in downtown Verrado.

I ❤️: Piña colada with coconut whip cream

Fun Fact: I got so frustrated because I missed 2 of their events last summer, that I decided to solve that problem and The Buzz (with cultivated event listings) was born!

THE GELATO TAVERN

The Gelato Tavern has been a local favorite since they first opened their doors in 2023. This was also the first place to introduce me to “Affogato” (Gelato & Espresso). I could drink coffee on the surface of the sun, but if that’s not your thing in summer, go for straight Gelato. Or, try their Italian Iced Soda or something else off their special summer drink menu.

My Order: Vanilla Affogato with rose petals (not 100% sure I’m saying that right; basically vanilla gelato, espresso & rose petal sprinkles).

Fun Fact: I wrote a whole feature story about The Gelato Tavern, way back in Issue No. 4.

A&L WATER & ICE CREAM

A&L Water & Ice Cream

If you’re up for an E-Ticket Adventure, hop in the car and head on over to A&L located at the corner of Watson & Yuma. That parking lot will really get your heart pumping, so keep your head on a swivel and your foot near the brake. I visit often because I refill my water bottles there, but never, ever, ever go at rush hour. Joking aside, this is a secret spot mom & pop shop that doesn’t get enough attention.

Must Try: They serve Thrifty ice cream. Mmmmm chocolate malted crunch. So simple. So good! Reminds me of my childhood. If you know you know!

Fun Fact: I also wrote a feature story about A&L early on, in Issue No. 3.

THE PERFECT SCOOP

This is the kinda of place where you have to plan your visit because they’re only open on Saturdays and Sundays from 4-9 PM. They’re mobile but always set up in the same spot. Enter the address in your GPS and just when you think you’ve missed it, their truck will pop up in a dirt field. We were surprised to find such a crowd; they have built quite a following! Before you visit, check out their menu on Instagram; it changes weekly.

We ordered: Me: 2 Scoops (Coffee Toffee + Butter Pecan); Mr. Buzz: Root Beer Float (the classic w/ vanilla ice cream)

PALETAS LA MICHOKANA

Unfortunately, this is the one place that I was unable to visit in person before my publication deadline. That’s a bummer too because they have rave reviews and have also received awards for their creations. I love this post on their Instagram page… reminds me of that I Love Lucy episode with the chocolates. (Oh vey, I’m old, I hope at least one of you knows what I’m referring to. 😆)

What I plan to order: Frescas Con Crema

Now tell me, where’s your favorite place to grab a goodie? I already know I’m going to have to write a Part 2! I couldn’t fit all my finds here!
