LOCAL EATS: SOMEBURROS

Did Someone Say Nachos?

MY LOVE LANGUAGE

Admittedly, I have a horrible memory. Except, when it comes to food. In fact, all my most-vivid memories involve food. I never looked into my actual “love language,” but I never needed to, it’s obviously FOOD. As I was writing this, I realized that I probably have a terrible memory because of all the food memories! Ha!

When I was little, I remember going to the market every week with my grandma Betty. We’d head straight for the bakery section and pick out a round, double-layered chocolate-chocolate cake as our “goodie.” She would get so excited about it. I can still see her, acting coy, like she knew she we probably shouldn’t, but well, food was her love language too. That’s where I get it from.

Back home, she’d put it in the “ice box” and we’d wait for the thick frosting to get really cold. Then, we’d then sit down at her kitchen table with a big glass of cold milk and settle in for a game (or 10) of Yahtzee. We’d linger there together all afternoon, adding to more of my favorite memories (and I still have—and play—that old Yahtzee game).

FLASHBACKS

Sometimes (most of the time), I can barely recall yesterday, but as soon as I get to thinking about food, the memories come flooding back.

Another one of those trigger points recently happened again, which is why I stopped what I was doing and had to start writing this article, a deviation from what I had originally planned on writing about this week.

Because, now in my memory, I will also never forget the time (on June 30, 2025 at 1:05 PM) when Someburros’ “Stadium Nachos” announcement popped in my Facebook feed and I knew immediately what I was having for dinner.

I CAN’T WAIT

And then I read the “fine print” and it said, “starting July 1st…” which was the next day!

I don’t know if this ever happens to you, but when I want something specific (like this exact thing, Stadium Nachos!!!), I’m going to be restless and hungry until I get what I want. Let me see what time they open. Drive-thru: 7 AM. I can’t wait!

Had I known then, what I know now, I could have arrived at opening (7 AM) and ordered Stadium Nachos! That’s right, I learned this morning that they serve their regular menu FOR BREAKFAST too (along with the regular breakfast menu).

SHE TAKES THE GOLD!

This day however, on my very first visit (on July 1st), I arrived at lunchtime to be sure I could get what I was craving. I’ve now been to Someburros so many times that my orders are starting to run together and I can’t remember what I had when…

But one thing I’ll never forget? I was the first person to order Stadium Nachos at the Buckeye location!

Yes, I will wear that badge of honor until the day I die! Gold Medal Winner! First in line, baby!

And the nachos? The best I’ve ever had at any restaurant! Thin, crispy chips that didn’t get soggy, not even the very last one! All served in a pizza-like box which is especially genius! With the best salsa that I’ve had in Arizona!

YES, I WILL DARE SAY, GOURMET

This is not your typical fast food restaurant. This is also not what I was expecting!

I’m so grateful that less than 2 miles from my house and in less than 15 minutes door-to-door round trip, I can be munching on a plethora of fresh, delicious options. I’ve been waiting 4 years for this—we moved here in June of 2021 and I’ve written before how much I miss “California” Mexican Food!

While I have since found (and wrote about) a few other local favorites, Someburros’ menu offers the most extensive options for my food sensitivities.

And, it’s easiest to access (hello drive-thru!) and offers the best value in terms of price & high quality ingrediants!

While I think I already know what I will be ordering on repeat (yes, nachos for breakfast!) I do intend to eat my way through the menu which we’ve already started doing…

Everything we’ve had has been exceptional! Fresh, crunchy and most of all flavorful and not greasy!

I’M ADDICTED

I visited again this past Tuesday (7/15). It took everything in me to not order Stadium Nachos again but I wanted to be able to tell you about other things besides that… My dinner is above!

And, the fish taco… I typically prefer grilled fish tacos (impossible to find in AZ!), this one (fried) was sooo good! Not at all greasy and the slaw… Mmmmmmm so crunchy, fresh & flavorful!

All of this for $16.34!!! Biggest shock? That huge “individual bag” of chips for only eighty-five cents!!! I was expecting 5 chips—this comes with at least 20 and plenty for one person.

I also went back last night (7/16) and ordered the Stadium Nachos again (this time without the jalapeños). Was so hungry after a long, hard day, that I failed to take any pictures but they were the same as the first time and consistency also matters. Love that!

And went back again, THIS MORNING, to get a cold brew, because, well, this story wasn’t going to write itself. (This is when I found out I could order Stadium Nachos for breakfast.)

NO WONDER!

Someburros wasn’t born yesterday! They opened the first one in 1986 in Tempe. Being born in the 80’s of course they are special! If you know you know!

And, no wonder they have things so dialed in! Their parent company, Poncho’s, was opened in South Phoenix in 1972!!! They are still going strong! And, yes, I will be visiting!

Read more about their history and check out their other family photos here!

BURRO FACTS

This morning’s coldbrew - I ❤️ their LOGO!

I swear, it’s like this place was made just for me! The logo- a burro! Stop it!

I was actually raised in the Mule Capital of the World, so naturally burros hold a special place in my heart. Allow me to take this opportunity to drop some fun facts for you to file away for trivia night:

  • Burro is the Spanish word for donkey.

  • A mule is the offspring of a male burro (called a jack) and a female horse (called a mare).

  • Burros are smaller than mules, with long ears, a short mane and a tufted tail.

  • Mules look more like horses.

Sidenote: the first time I visited the local Chamber of Commerce, I mentioned my Mule Capital upbringing and some folks actually had heard of it! Makes sense, though doesn’t it with all the cowboys here? I love that!

Why am I telling you this? Well, I like educating you on things you didn’t know you need to know! 😉

And, I just love how Someburros made a play on that name! They are so creative!

IF IT’S NOT A ….

This whole experience with Someburros has reminded me about what I want to write about and share here in The Buzz… You know the sayin: “If it’s not a h*ll yes, it’s a h*ll no!”…

I want to write stories about people, places and things that touch my soul, do business with friends who become family, and build a life that I don’t want a vacation from (already doing that!).

I want more of this in life—the kind of energy I’ve gotten from Someburros! It’s on my vision board! So keep your eyes peeled for the Someburro’s logo headlining The Buzz and know when that day comes, I’ll be celebrating with some stadium nachos and a cold brew (or 2)! In the meantime, be looking for me in the drive-thru.

🐝 BEE IN THE KNOW

Summer Scratcher Promo Now Thru 7/20

I will leave you with a few things that are good to know:

  • 📱Download the app so you can join their Rewards Program and get exclusive deals & perks!

  • 🌀 Getting into their lot from Verrado Way (entering off Roosevelt) is quirky. Maybe once that mall area is completely built-out, it will be easier.

  • 🍺 They also serve beer & frozen margaritas and, yes, you can order those in the drive-thru too!

  • 🧾Need a receipt? Be sure to ask for one—they don’t automatically hand them out. Learned this the hard way.

  • ☀️ Right now (July 7-20), you get a “Summer Scratcher” with every order. So far, I’ve accumulated two and both are for 20% off. Remember to put the cards in your car though so you can actually use them on your next visit. Also learned this the hard way. I didn’t get one with my coffee this morning though, so there may be a minimum order to qualify. Be sure to ask!

  • 🌮 They also offer catering! Remember this for your next gathering!
