LOCAL EATS: ROOFTOP ON MILLER

Classic Comfort Food Done Oh So Right

THANK A CHATBOT

I’ve been hearing about Rooftop on Miller (hereinafter “Rooftop”) off and on for years. Because of it’s location (on Miller Road), in an area I rarely have reason to visit, I had forgotten all about them. (Mea culpa.)

That was until the new ChatBot (ugh) in one of my favorite local Facebook groups, asked about ‘favorite restaurants’ and Rooftop was mentioned over and over again. Most of the other restaurants, I have either written about before or they’re already on my list. So, I knew immediately that Rooftop would be the feature this week and I was actually really excited to finally visit.

But first, I had to find the door.

ENTER HERE

I’m going to save you the trouble of taking a jog around the building like I did… Had I parked in the front, I would have easily seen where to enter the building. Right in front!

In my mind, it was located on a roof (hey, honest mistake given the name!), so I was looking for a staircase.

In actuality, the main restaurant is not on the roof, although there is a dining room on the second floor, accessible by stairs, inside the building.

I THOUGHT IT WAS A BAR. ON A ROOF.

When I entered the front doors, it was so much different than I was expecting. Well, I was already caught off-guard because it was on the ground floor and not the roof. But… actually, it’s hard to describe… I thought I was going to find a bar, bar.

But this is a sports bar… with really white & bright lights.

The lights were so bright in fact, that I would have put on my sunglasses, except I left them at home. It pains me to write anything negative about any place I visit—so I feel really bad even writing this. But, I have to be honest in my experience and just dimming those overhead spotlights down a notch or two would go a long way in warming up the room. Or maybe surgery is performed on the tables, and seeing what you’re cutting is necessary. I don’t know, I meant to ask.

I was seated at a half-booth in front of an entire wall of giant tv’s, with a clear view of the Dodger game, just like being at home. (Except, go Angels! Uhm, I mean, go Diamondbacks!)

I was quickly approached by the sweetest server (thank you, Zariah), who dropped off the menu and returned with my ice water. Things were immediately looking up when the water came with a lemon—just the way I like it. Today, I didn’t even ask and ta-da, it appeared!

Speaking of water, it was really good water too! This little details mean a lot to me (as all I drink is water).

THE FOOD

Of course I studied the menu extensively before I even decided to come. Mainly because, I have extremely annoying food sensitivities that limit what I can eat. Because of that, a bunch of things that I would have tried, had to be nixed from my list. These all sounded so good:

As for me though, I had to follow ‘the rules’ (booo!!!!). I was planning on getting a salad then changed my mind at the last minute and ordered potato skins. Believe it or not, getting those done right is next to impossible, so I figured I'd start there this trip. And, if those were done right, there’d be a next time, and then I’d graduate to the salad.

Well, it took no longer than these lil taters being placed in front of me that I could tell this was about to be a very different experience; not the typical dried out, flavorless potato skins. I was hoping they tasted as good as they looked and… oh-my-goodness!!! I almost cried.

It is obvious at first bite that these are quality ingredients, even the sour cream was like nothing I’d ever had before. So rich and thick and flavorful. I actually usually always order ranch with my skins but with these, the sour cream was the ticket!

They arrived hot and stayed warm from start to finish. I’d also be curious to know how they are cooked. They were crunchy, perhaps air fried? All I know, is they weren’t greasy at all and had the perfect ratio of potato, skin & toppings.

I very quickly realized why people rave about Rooftop! This is quality food made with the best ingredients. There’s no cutting corners here.

Their website also indicates they use only fresh ingredients and nothing is ever frozen.

THE TAB

Along with their incredible food, they offer really affordable prices. I had a great meal for $12 (well, $17 including the tip). Either way, massive bargain! And, it was plenty of food for me. I appreciate the fact that they’ve somehow figured out how to keep the quality UP and the prices DOWN. Bravo!

THE 1-3 PUNCH!

😁 Happy Hour is 11-7 every day! Had I arrived a little earlier (before 7 PM), I could have even gotten a better deal on the skins! Appetizers on the Happy Hour Menu are only $7!

🍰 And look at all those desserts! I also would’ve loved to try the cheesecake. Mmmmmm, my old favorite. Sadly, not something I can have anymore.

🥊 Also, if you’re looking for a place to watch the fights, this looks to be a popular place to go! Tossing that little tidbit in here at the last minute after perusing their Instagram page (linked below).

THE DETAILS

Zariah filled me in on the Filiberto’s connection, the same people own both. The entire place was once a Filiberto’s sports bar (I’m sure many of you remember that), before it was remodeled to Rooftop. They are currently under construction on a whole new building in the parking lot, which will, upon completion house Filiberto’s. So, more changes are on the horizon for both establishments. For now, both restaurants share the same kitchen, hence the need for a door connecting them.

✅ Random, but important:

  • The staff hustles!

  • Many people were seen leaving with doggie bags (big portions!)

  • The dining room temp was perfect. I wasn’t freezing and didn’t need a sweater.

  • You can eat upstairs (on the ‘roof’), it’s quieter. Check it out first before you commit. The evening I was there, the outside air was unpleasant and was seeping in through the cracked doors; very unappetizing.

GETTING THERE

Rooftop is located on Miller & West Broadway in Buckeye. From our house in Verrado, it took about 20 minutes to get there. 17 miles rountrip.

On the way home, I did an impromptu Instagram Live when I was surprised by the Space-X Rocket Launch blasting across the sky! I’ve seen it several times before, but I still get excited when I see it. I barely made it in time, but you can catch the tail-end on the video. We get a great front row seat to that show here in Buckeye. It’s really cool to watch. Next time, I’ll post the launch date/time in The Buzz and on Instagram.

UNTIL NEXT WEEK…

As always, if you go, please let them know The Buckeye Buzz sent ya! And someone, please, give me the lowdown on that mac-n-cheese! 😉
