HIDDEN GEM: ROMAN'S OASIS

Tacos, Two-Steps & Good, Clean Fun!

IT’S NOT WHAT YOU THINK

You’ve probably driven by it before… You probably have your own ideas about what it’s like behind that neon sign… I had my own ideas too, as did Mr. Buzz who said, “You better cowboy up if you’re going there” as I was getting ready for my night out.

Unfortunately, my cowboy boots don’t fit like they used to so, I wore my Vans instead. Totally fine!

I’ve been to Roman’s Oasis a few times over the past few months because I’ve set a personal goal to do something I’ve long convinced myself I can’t do: dance. So, I started heading to Roman’s specifically for the line dance lessons (schedule below).

I’ve been listing their events since I started The Buzz and I’ve always been intrigued by how much they have going on. My neighbors, Maggie and Tony, had also told me how much they love Roman’s Specials (more on that below) so I figured it was time to check things out for myself.

And let me tell you, I love being surprised, and oh boy, was I!

FIRST VISIT: TACO TUESDAY

The first time I went was on a Tuesday night, which just so happens to be Taco Tuesday! You can get three crunchy beef tacos for $7.

DO YOU COME HERE OFTEN?

Mary, Martha & Susie (from Surprise)

It’s the first thing I asked when I sat down (they had the best table) and I quickly followed with, “That’s not a pickup line, I promise!” We all got a good laugh out of that.

Turns out, it was their very first visit. They’d driven all the way from Surprise, which, when I repeated it back in disbelief, made them laugh again. “It’s not that far!” they insisted. They were there for one reason: the food. Apparently, their neighbors also rave about it.

SIDELINED

I’ll admit, I was a little intimidated by the dancers that night, so I sat on the sidelines and just enjoyed the show instead. I had THE BEST time! Such good vibes and incredible dancing! I later learned that Tuesday’s lessons are considered “intermediate,” and if you watch the video, you’ll see why! ⤵️

ROUND TWO

Potato Skins $12

On my second visit, I ordered the potato skins and they were delicious!

LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, STOMP, STOMP

Determined to actually step onto the dance floor, I went back another night. This time on a Monday evening.

It was packed and the demographic my speed (turns out they were all pretty good dancers too… regulars for sure). What I love the most about Roman’s is that all ages are welcomed and feel at home here. Zero pretension!

That night, I wiggled my way to the back corner of the dance floor (which, depending on the rotation, occasionally becomes the front… ahhh!) and hoped I wouldn’t trip anyone up. (Those of you old enough to remember step aerobics classes, well, I was the girl doing the exact opposite of everyone else in class. Because of the step elevation, it was blatantly obvious when I was UP and the rest of the class was DOWN. I can laugh about it now.)

For the first few minutes, I was feeling confident, until the instructor added more steps. Somewhere between the grapevine and the twirl, I got completely tangled up. Still, it was a great time and Greek Country Dancer was there that night too, which was a real treat! ⤵️

JUST. STOP. THINKING!

Funny, I came here to try and escape my brain only to realize: my problem isn’t rhythm, it’s overthinking. I can run, but I can’t hide. And, I can’t dance, because I can’t stop thinking!

After chatting with several of the seasoned dancers and teachers, they all said the same thing: line dancing is just like anything else, you have to stick with it long enough for your muscle memory to take over (and hopefully the brain to silence!).

By my calculations, I’m only about 10,000 hours away from that point… 😉

Next time, I’m planning to go on a Friday night, when lessons are geared more toward beginners. So, stay tuned and follow The Buzz on Instagram for updates on my ongoing dance journey because I’ll be asking for you to come with me!

Sorry, this is all I can give you as far as the menu goes. They do not have a website, the website that comes up under their name is not owned by them.

LOCAL LEGEND

Roman’s Oasis is a family-owned West Valley institution. It’s been a go-to spot for good food, live music, and dancing for decades. Generations of locals have celebrated birthdays, first dates, and Friday nights on that same dance floor.

Originally called the Oasis, it was first established in 1917 as a meeting place for farmers. In 1986 it was purchased by Roman Comer and renamed “Roman’s Oasis.” His family still owns and runs it.

But big changes are coming. Due to nearby road-widening on Yuma Road, Roman’s will soon be relocating, marking the end of an era for the “original” Roman’s building. So if you haven’t experienced it yet, the neon glow and the eclectic atmosphere, now’s the time!

Please, please stop by and check out this slice of history before it moves on to its next chapter. It truly is a one-of-a-kind local legend.
